Weekend Wrap-Up: 'On Stranger Tides' sinks, yet swims

Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz star in #1 Pirates of the
Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
The summer blockbusters have begun and Johnny Depp's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides took the weekend by storm, with an opening weekend gross of $90.1 million. While a big weekend--in fact, the biggest of the year, so far--this marks the lowest performance for the Caribbean franchise.

Coming in second was Bridesmaids which made a cool $21.1 million in revenue. After a two-weekend span, this ladies-night, knee-slapping comedy made almost $60 million. Critics are loving this film for its genuine humor and strong story. However, the ladies of Bridesmaids will for sure have some competition next weekend with the release of The Hangover Part II.

Thor came in third with $15.5 million over the weekend. But, after a $145 million gross in three weeks, we can expect this film will be around the theaters for a while. Fast Five and Rio round out the top five, as Priest fell in it's second week, earning only $4.6 million.

Coming out next weekend is the highly, hotly anticipated raunch-fest The Hangover: Part II, which all critics are buzzing to know if the second can follow up to the first. Equally anticipated is the return of Jack Black as Po in Kung Fu Panda 2. Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life (starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn), also opens in limited theaters -- the drama just won the acclaimed Palme d'Or last week at Cannes.
