Release Date: June 22, 2012
Cast: Emma Thompson, Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly
Director: Mark Andrews
Pixar hit a little bump in the road this past weekend with their critical flop Cars 2, but ever-looking forward, they smartly answered back with this peak at their next film, a Scottish epic adventure Brave. This is Pixar's first original film since 2009's Up, and boy does it look gorgeous (just look at the rolling hills and the foggy 'scape)! The story is the classic destiny-defining arch of a young hero embarking on a right of passage. This is Pixar's first take on a fairy tale, and they're taking that story arch into a new direction. Just as movies like Tangled before it, our brave hero is a strong woman; and one that can really kick-ass on the bow-and-arrow!
Release Date: November 11, 2011
Cast: Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke, Freida Pinto, John Hurt
Director: Tarsem Singh
There are two things that Tarsem Singh's Immortals wants you to do: 1) be reminded of the awesomeness of Zack Snyder's 300, and 2) forget just how crappy everything was with last year's Clash of the Titans remake. From the look of the trailer, certainly Immortals owes a lot to 300, especially as it's being promoted as "from the producers" of Synder's film. However, it might be an uphill battle for the rest of the film, as the official synopsis feels somewhat familiar. Here's what we're in store for: loosely based on a Greek myth, Henry Cavill (who will be donning Superman's red cape next year) stars as Theseus, a peasant chosen by Zeus to battle the Titan Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) before he and the rest of his Titans can sack revenge on the Olympians. Singh is going to have to take a wholly original approach in order to win over critics, but from the trailer, I bet audiences will certainly turn out.
War Horse (2011)
Release Date: December 28, 2011
Cast: Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson
Director: Steven Speilberg
Grab your tissues, because this is going to be one film that will tug on your heart-strings. Steven Speilberg's War Horse explores the bond of a young man and his horse, who is soon sold into the cavalry and sent to World War I. Yes, it's a WWI movie from Spielberg, the man who made a career out of WWII. By all accounts from this teaser, War Horse is a sure-fire Oscar contender, and a picture that will likely garner a number of critic awards. It's also great to see a WWI pic, as so little has been done in recent decades with the trenches of that war.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)
Release Date: December 16, 2011
Cast: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton
Director: Brad Bird
Sleek and sexy, these have been the hallmarks of the Mission: Impossible franchise, and certainly M:I:IV hits it right on the money. This is director Brad Bird's first step into live-action, and man is the action ever present. Cool to see Simon Pegg reprise his role from M:I:3, and equally cool to see Jeremy Renner as the bad guy…not so cool hearing Eminem, but that can be forgiven. While this fourth installment will probably not earn much by way of critical praise, there's certainly enough here to entertain audiences.
Poster Watch: Avengers Tease
As an added bonus, here's a poster tease for the upcoming Avengers movie. Is it real (official) or fake? According to Topless Robot it's real enough. This poster was snapped at the Licensing International Expo earlier this month in Las Vegas.
